Sarah Cleary
Born in the community of Mashteuiatsh, she grew up on the banks of Piekukami, the ilnu name of Lac-St-Jean. Since her childhood, this self-taught artist was fascinated by the art and traditions of Piekuakamilnuatsh, the humans of Lac St-Jean.
Originally painting to express her revolt and anger at the despair of her people, she discovers the pacifist power of her paintings, denouncers of the established order and claimants of the right to affirmation. Guided by her instincts, dreams and ancestors, she explores the theme of duality and contrast in painting and performance.
Sarah Cleary is now a member of the «Trickster Sisters» collective with Atikamekw artist Eruoma Awashish.
