Jacques Newashish

Born in 1958, this multidisciplinary artist is a member of the Wemotaci community in Mauricie. His parents taught him traditional values and the meaning of life, which he still passes on to young people in Atikamekw language workshops in schools in his community.

Jacques Newashish works as a painter, sculptor, engraver, storyteller, performer, director, actor and singer. Many of his projects combine performance and installation. The artist was also rewarded for his performance in the film "Before the streets" in 2016. 

Inspired by indigenous legends and traditions, his works transcend folklore and are contemporary.
